AMOS & CELIA HEILICHER MINNEAPOLIS JEWISH DAY SCHOOL

Middle School

Music Curriculum by Grade Level

Sixth Grade

As our students expand their study of diverse musical genres, sixth graders start to learn to view music as an instrument for social change as well as driving force in shaping the contemporary musical world. In sixth grade students discover how music has geographical ties, and they study artist biographies from these cities. They also study vocal techniques used in jazz and how jazz transformed over a 100 year period in the United States. We also learn twelve songs from contemporary and classic Broadway shows. The students expand their ability to play more complex rhythms and melodies as well as layered harmony parts on the Orff instruments.

Units of study include:

  • Vocal Music-Vocal Jazz Unit
  • Broadway Unit Songs
  • Music Literacy
  • Playing Instruments
  • United States Musical Cities and Styles

Seventh & Eighth Grades

Students in seventh and eighth grades may be offered additional music course offerings in instrumental music, digital music, and/or music literacy, dependent on student interest and instructor availability. Music course offerings change from year to year and some may be offered after school as extra-curriculars.

Choir
Students in grades two through eight are eligible to be in the choir. Choir rehearsals are held during lunch periods and before school with additional practices for special performances. The choir performs at Holidays Under Glass each December at the IDS Crystal Court in downtown Minneapolis. In addition, the choir sings at a variety of community events in Twin Cities Jewish community, including Empty Bowls, a fundraiser for ending hunger in St. Louis Park and the community-wide Yom Ha'atzmauut (Israeli Independence Day) festivities.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Vocal Ensemble
In this elective, seventh and eighth grade students deepen their vocal performance techniques with our choir director. The ensemble sings popular songs in both English and Hebrew at school assemblies and Holidays Under Glass.

Band

Heilicher fourth through eighth graders can take band with instructors from an area music school including individual and ensemble lessons. Instruments offered are woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Students can choose from flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion instruments. The band performs several times throughout the school year.
